Free Daffodils For Newport Neighborhoods

The free bulbs will be available at the Easton's Beach Parking lot on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Residents must then pledge to plant the bulbs this fall.

Newport is about to get daffy.

For the past seven years, a group of local organizations, have come together to plant 160,000 daffodils throughout the city. To honor of Newport’s 375th anniversary next year, the project has set a much more ambitious goal of a million plantings. The new project has been named Daffodillion.

“With the help of Newport residents and businesses, we want to grow that to one million and help make Newport an even more beautiful city in which to live, work and to visit each and every spring,” said John Hirschboeck, Project Director for Daffodillion.

Daffy Founders Club

In honor of Newport’s 375th Anniversary in 2014, a donation of $375 will plant 1,639 daffodils, the year of the city’s founding. All Founders club members will receive special recognition in April, 2014 when the daffodils bloom throughout Newport. “The more Founders Club Members who join in beautifying Newport, the more free bulbs we can give away. Of course donations of any amount are appreciated,” said Hirschboeck. “Checks can be made out to ALN-Daffodillion and mailed to: Daffodillion, c/o of Alliance for a Livable Newport, PO Box 2636, Newport, RI 02840.”
