And how long is that supposed to take? One generation? Two generations? A year? Most immigrants have tried to hold on to their languages and traditions when they come here - that includes the Italians, French Canadians, Portuguese, Chinese, Greeks, etc. This is not uncommon.

ReplyAll of these stats are ridiculous. Ask another company to survey and it would be something different. Please, let's stop with these ridiculous comparisons and just support your public schools! Not charter schools....real PUBLIC schools!

By the way, my widget comment was about expectation by the state and the testing involved. Not the instruction in the classroom. It's my prerogative to use whatever name I want....

I am a liability? Actually Newport teachers know more about differentiated instruction than other schools. You see the schools from the outside. I can't blame you for that, but what you see or read is not reality. Newport is not world class? Ask people from all over the world who come here. Ask the sailing community. Ask the Preservation Society. I have traveled quite a bit and every time I come home, I feel very lucky to live here.

Because students are not widgets that fit into a one size fits all education. Newport's demographics are far more diverse than our suburban neighbors. Some kids come to school overcoming tremendous adversity. Just like years ago when families relied on their children to bring home a paycheck, kids drop out to help provide for their families. Some get their GED. Not all kids are can go to college but they still have value. Go to Rogers and see what's happening there. I doubt you would walk out disappointed.

.....as I said, no one ever felt sorry for my kids attending Newport Public Schools. This sounds like a vendetta against the superintendent. Where do your kids go to school? I don't think they go to school in Newport. If not, I feel sorry for you. They might be missing out on a creative, diverse group of kids who reflect the real world.

Funny, nobody has ever felt sorry for me or my kids attending Newport Public Schools. Most people are jealous that they get to grow up in a such a vital, world class city. And....if they did, I'd tell them where to go....
