ReplyThe term can be a bit confusing and, perhaps, should be changed to "deterioration through owner neglect". There is no intent to demolish anything but, rather, an attempt to prevent imminent loss through negligence. It is incumbent on the municipality through its governing bodies to protect neighborhoods from disaster and historic buildings from loss.

ReplyThe term "demolition by neglect" is a bit confusing and, perhaps, should be changed to "deterioration through owner neglect". There is no intent to demolish anything but, rather, an attempt to encourage property owners to take care of their properties. When historic structures are in peril it is necessary for the municipality to take action to prevent their loss through owner negligence.

ReplyAnother photograph of "The Waves" from sometime in the forties on a less chilly day. The woman on the lawn might be Jane Pope, J. R. Pope's daughter. But it also could be Mrs. Pell or her mother who owned the house for a period.

ReplyCertainly Paul Watters knows better and I'm surprised that someone on your staff didn't pick it up but the building pictured is "The Waves" designed and built by architect John Russell Pope for himself in 1929 on the site of the former Lippett Castle. The house has an interesting history and is called "The Waves" not because of its location on a promontory surrounded by the ocean on three sides but because of the undulating pattern of the roof slates.

The STOP signs that are ignored around the city are too numerous to mention. One of the biggest problems is at the top of Morton Ave at the corner of Coggeshall where there is no STOP sign for traffic traveling east on Morton Ave. And yet, invariably, traffic stops, thereby confounding the flow and confusing drivers traveling north on Coggeshall where there is a STOP sign. It might be considered to put a sign on the stone wall at the top of Morton Ave. stating - GO! or "proceed cautiously" with a large, green arrow pointing left.
