Like many of the R.M.S. Titanic's approximately 2,200 passengers, Americans Karl Howell Behr and Richard Norris Williams II climbed aboard the ill-fated ship in search of their dreams- Behr was chasing love, and Williams striving for an Ivy League education and a successful tennis career. When the grand, "unsinkable" ship struck an iceberg late on April 14, 1912, the two were among the small, fortunate group of just 700 or so survivors. After meeting for the first time aboard the rescue ship R.M.S. Carpathia, neither man took their good fortune for granted, and they achieved great success as two of the best players in the history of tennis. Williams remarkably won the U.S. Nationals Mixed Doubles title just months after the Titanic …

The ballet company has marked its 30th anniversary from its establishment in February 1982.
For the past three decades, the Island Moving Company has been making a scene, literally, all around Newport. Established in February, 1982, the classically trained contemporary ballet company has put on several shows a year at their stage on Charles Street and beyond. Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen was one of the moving forces behind the company in its earliest days, when about ten people decided it was time to present new work to the community. The Island Moving Co. had its first performance at the then Newport Art Association. Ohlsen recalled their first performance in February 1982, which had been scheduled in the yet-to-be refurbished Casino Theatre. “The roof fell in and we had to scramble to find a place to perform,” she said. The …

When a massive earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, the catastrophe shed light on the small island nation’s already dire situation of poverty. However, a group of three local women and many of their friends viewed the earthquake with the unique perspective of already knowing first-hand how difficult life was prior to the earthquake for the people of Haiti, and what its devastation would mean. On Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m., Gail Alofsin and Colleen Hopkins, both of Newport, and Kate Whitney Lucey, of Middletown, will share stories of their personal experiences volunteering in Haiti in a special presentation at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. The presentation kicks off the Center’s new Community Forum program, a …
