Chafee Declares State of Emergency

Motorists are asked to get off the roads as the storm intensifies. Up to 30 inches are of snow is possible in some areas.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has declared a state of emergency, as forecasted snowfall totals continue to increase. Parts of Rhode Island — including Newport — could see as much as 24 inches of snow by the time the storm abates tomorrow afternoon.  Newport residents should be getting off the roads as the storm picks up steam. There is a very good chance Newport will see 2 feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service, but areas from Providence and points north could potentially get 30 inches. "We have a very serious storm approaching," Chafee said. "I encourage all Rhode Islanders to take this seriously. This is a major storm. Be prepared." Chafee Declares State of Emergency

State and local officials are preparing a disaster plan as Hurricane Irene approaches.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee has declared a state of emergency for Rhode Island, warning residents that an impact from Hurricane Irene is certain. "There is no doubt that Rhode Island will be affected by Hurricane Irene," Chafee said this afternoon during a press briefing at the Emergency Management Agency in Cranston. "I've signed a declaration of emergency, effective immediately. This declaration is a proactive step in our hurricane plans to make sure that we as a state are doing all that we can to get Rhode Island through this storm safely and securely."
