2,500 Athletes Complete Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run

Sunday morning, Geoff Nelson of Providence was first to cross the finish line of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority’s Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run, sponsored by Newport Hospital.  The top female finisher was Kristin Bull of Melbourne, Australia, who had entered the cancelled New York City Marathon and decided to give the Newport Pell Bridge a try.  Of the 2,500 people who entered, 2,218 athletes crossed the finish line of the four-mile course.  The youngest competitors were four eight-year olds, and the oldest was Helen DiDonato of South Kingstown, who celebrated her 88th birthday on Sunday. It would be nice to have a bike ride preceding the running race. The ride could start 5 minutes before the run, cross the bridge, take a turn around Ocean Drive and then finish downtown. Pete   more ›

Pell Bridge Run Road Closures

Certain areas, including the Pell Bridge, will be closed for part of Sunday.

The Newport area should be prepared for slight delays and traffic detours as a result of the Pell Bridge Run. The race begins at 6:30 a.m. and police will begin blocking off some roads as early as 4:30 a.m. No pedestrians other than registered athletes will be allowed on any part of the bridge. Jamestown From 4:30 to 7:30 a.m. East Shore Road will be closed between the intersection of Conanicus Avenue and the Rt. 138 on/off ramps. From 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. Conanicus Avenue will be closed at the intersection of East Shore Road through the on-ramp to Rt. 138 (Newport Pell Bridge).  The Downtown Newport exit will be closed to traffic until 8:00 a.m. Newport Pell Bridge Traffic on the Newport Pell Bridge will be reduced to a single lane in each …

Runners Will Cross Pell Bridge on Sunday

Runners will get the rare opportunity to run across the Newport Pell Bridge this Sunday.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, runners will get the rare opportunity to run across the Newport Pell Bridge right at the break of dawn during the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority’s Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run, sponsored by Newport Hospital.  Thousands of athletes and walking enthusiasts are expected to turn out for the unparalleled scenic panoramas visible from the bridge deck.
