Newport and Middletown Residents Speak Out on Stormwater Diffuser

The Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) on Tuesday night held a public forum on Middletown's $3.3 million Easton's Bay stormwater redirection project, recently awarded to C.B. Utility.

On Tuesday evening, the Coastal Resources Management Council held a public forum at theCommunity College of Rhode Island (CCRI) for residents to weigh-in on Middletown's stormwater project, to redirect discharge near Atlantic Beach to a new outfall 1,000 feet south and extended 500 feet into Easton Bay. On August 3, the Middletown Town Council awarded a $3.3 million construction contract to C.B. Utility to perform the work.The goal of the project is to push pollutants away from the shallow swimming areas and futher into the deeper bay, so the bacteria will naturally diffuse and filter to safer limits by the time it arrives back to the beach.  In the spring, the City of Newport completed a project with the same goal for Newport storm water…

URI Expert Explains How To Prevent Storm Runoff From Polluting The Bay

URI's Lorraine Joubert discusses how to keep that filthy water from getting into the Narragansett Bay.

It is beach season in Rhode Island. Pack up the kids, the beach towels and umbrella, the cooler, and a bucketful of suntan lotion and head for the shore. Here are some things you won't have to take: cigarette butts, lawn fertilizer, pet poop, and oil and gas residues from roads and driveways. They will get there on their own. What Rhode Islanders don't realize as well as they should is that the main source of pollution to our water bodies is storm-water runoff.
