DiPalma Names Concerns With Proposed Budget

After an initial review of the proposed budget, State Sen. Dipalma listed two concerns.

Two weeks into the new year, Gov. Lincoln Chafee gave his State of the State address to the Rhode Island General Assembly and introduced his proposed $8.2-billion 2013-2014 budget. "I submit this budget to the General Assembly on Jan. 16th, on time and the earliest that a governor has done so in over two decades," said the governor. State Sen. Louis DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton) who serves as the vice-chair of the Senate Finance Committee, said after an initial review, he had concerns that aid for developmental disability communities was not listed as a priority.  Additionally, he expressed concern that an annual funding increase to nursing homes was suspended in the proposed budget. Local Officials Weigh In on Affordable Health Care Act

Local officials react to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Health Care Act

This morning, in a historic decision, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to uphold the Affordable Health Care Act, the Obama's health care law enacted two years ago. “The Supreme Court today sent a clear message that those reforms will go forward.  By upholding the law, the Court validated the principle that all Americans should have access to health care," said U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Supporters of the Act say it is the largest tax cut for health care in history. Opponents say it has raised taxes for the middle class, for those who do not elect to enroll in the qualifying programs. Individuals who do not have insurance may incur tax penalties under the Act. Senate Approves Pedestrian-Friendly Street Design Bill

Sen. Lou DiPalma's legislation calls for more environmentally-conscious street design standards. The House version has been introduced.

The following is a press release was issued by the Rhode Island General Assembly: The Senate Tuesday passed legislation aimed at ensuring future road construction projects are developed with an eye toward the safety and ease of all types of users. The legislation (2012-S 2131), sponsored by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Newport, Little Compton, Tiverton), requires the state to use “complete street” design features in all federal - and state-funded road construction projects, with an eye not only toward motorists, but also bicyclists, public transportation users and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
