Members of the Alliance for Neighborhood Schools explained Wednesday why they believe keeping the elementary schools would benefit Newport more than a 'mega school.'
Opponents of the Claiborne D. Pell Elementary School plan gathered at Newport Public Library Wednesday to present to the public their reasons for why everyone should say 'Pell No!' on Nov. 2. A panel of parents and community members, all members of the recently formed Newport Alliance for Neighborhood Schools, voiced their skepticism about the supposed benefits to the plan, while continuing to advocate for what they see as the benefits to keeping the district's current four elementary school facilities. The nine School Committees candidates came together to answer questions on popular issues and corners regarding the Newport Public School system.
As a part of the upcoming election, the Alliance for Livable Newport and the League of Women Voters sponsored a forum for the School Committee candidates. There are six incumbents and three challengers vying for seven spots on the committee. Challenging are James Asbel, Lynn Ceglie, and Thomas Phelan. Elizabeth Candas of the League of Women Voters mediated the roundtable forum. The questions were formed by the Alliance for Livable Newport and focused on plans for a new elementary school, the strengths and weaknesses of the school system and administration, and future plans for the committee. A look at who's running to represent Newport's schools.
This week, Newport Patch's coverage of the Newport School Committee race addresses the controversial issue of regionalization of Aquidneck Island's schools. The challengers are listed first; the remaining six candidates are incumbents seeking reelection. An asterisk placed next to a school committee candidate's name indicates that,as of press time, repeated emails and phone calls requesting comment for the article were unreturned. And another thing....these are the same people who complain that there will be insufficient parking at the Pell site for large events when you have to park on the streets at all of the other neighborhood schools. These are the same people who suddenly want the upper and lower schools at the new facility to have joint events - whatever happened to the notion of a mega school??? Can't have it both …   more ›
