Prout Shocks Top-Seeded Rogers

The Crusaders never panic and execute down the stretch in a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers in the Division II playoffs.

PROVIDENCE – Balanced scoring and tough defense led to a 49-43 upset of No. 1 Rogers at the hands of No. 8 Prout in the Division II girls’ basketball playoff quarterfinals at Rhode Island College. The Crusaders trailed 7-1 and 16-7 in the first half, but rallied to trail only 23-18 at the half. Rogers got up by nine at various points in the second half, but couldn’t shake Prout or get up by double digits. Rogers led 32-24 early in the second half, and 34-26, but Prout refused to fade away. The Crusaders went on a 12-2 run, capped by senior Brittany Donovan banking in a 3-point shot, to take a 38-36 lead. When asked what he thought as Donovan launched the 3, Prout head coach Phil Quinn said, “No no no no no no!” After the game, Donovan …

RIHS Football Poll – Week 9

La Salle remains in the top spot, and they remain undefeated.

Back after a week’s absence – thanks Sandy! – not much has changed in the top six. Although the order has switched around a bit, La Salle, Hendricken, Cranston East and Portsmouth remain the top four in the state. La Salle remains undefeated, while the other three have traded wins and losses against one another. Behind the top four in Division I lurk the best two teams – so far – in Division II, Johnston and Cumberland. After the top six is where the ballot gets jumbled, with a mixture of mediocre Division I programs, good Division II programs and great Division III programs. The full poll: Dropped from the poll: No. 20 Warwick Vets. Also receiving votes: Moses Brown (15), Hope (13), North Smithfield (7), South Kingstown (7), Narragansett…

RIHS Football Poll – Week 7

La Salle takes all 14 first place votes in the latest Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll, after Hendricken is beaten by Portsmouth.

All 14 first place votes went to No. 1 La Salle this week, after No. 3 Hendricken took its first loss of the season, 39-13, to No. 2 Portsmouth. The win puts the Patriots in good position for a home game in the Division I playoffs, as long as they can win Friday against No. 4 Cranston East. The Thunderbolts can muddy the picture further with a win of their own though. The big movers in this week’s poll were No. 13 West Warwick, No. 18 Westerly and No. 19 East Providence, although for the wrong reasons. All three teams fell at least five spots after losses. The full poll: Dropped from the poll: No. 19 Moses Brown, No. 20 Shea. Also receiving votes: Mt. Hope (29), South Kingstown (24), Hope (16), Shea (12), Moses Brown (8), Narragansett (2) …

RIHS Football Poll – Week 6

The top seven remain unchanged, and Rogers remains unranked after another loss, in the latest Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll.

Inaction is the new action, as the top seven remain unchanged in the Rhode Island Sports Media Football Poll, after a weekend of mostly winning. No. 3 Cranston East lost, but it was to Hendricken, and while they lost a first place vote and about 25 points in the polls, it wasn’t enough to drop below No. 4 Portsmouth. No. 7 Barrington lost to Tolman, which caused the Tigers to jump two spots in the polls, up into a tie at No. 10 with East Greenwich. However, the loss of 30 poll points for the Eagles weren’t enough for No. 8 West Warwick to overtake them. All 20 teams from last week’s poll stayed in this week. The biggest mover was Westerly, which dropped four spots to No. 12 after a loss to Division I East Providence. East Providence moved …

Rogers is ranked at No. 12 at the start of the 2012 season.

The start of another high school football season brings the start of another tradition – The Rhode Island High School Football Media Poll. The poll is compiled thanks to the hard work of Eric Rueb, a sports editor with Southern Rhode Island Newspapers. Patch’s ballot is cast by Stephen Greenwell, the local editor of the South Kingstown and Narragansett site. Without further adieu, here is the preseason media ballot, followed by the Patch ballot. I think Rogers position on the poll is fair. Over the last 2 seasons Rogers has lost many of its key players and I feel this is a time of re-building for the team. There are still many players on the team who have contributed much to the teams success over the last few years so that will help. Plus many of the newer faces you will see on the field are determined to prove they belong there. Coach …   more ›
