RIBTA Re-elects Waluk as Vice Chairman, Darlington as Chairman

Former Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk said it is important for Aquidneck Island to have a voice on the RITBA board

  The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board voted Wednesday to re-elect David Darlington, of North Kingstown, as chairman and Former Newport Mayor Stephen Waluk as vice chairman.    Waluk was first appointed to the RITBA board by Governor Carcieri in 2005 and was recently reappointed by Governor Chafee for another four year term. "I am happy to be re-elected as Vice Chair of the RITBA," said Waluk. "It is important that Newport and Aquidneck Island have a voice on this board." Last year, Rhode Island's General Assembly approved to move two additional bridges into RIBTA's jurisdiction and install tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge to fund the maintenance. Lawmakers to Discuss Alternative to Tolls Today

A piece of legislation will be debated today that would stop the toll proposal as well as prevent rate hikes on the Newport Pell Bridge.

A piece of legislation will be heard by the Senate Finance Committee today that would not only avoid tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge, but also prevent toll hikes on the Newport Pell Bridge and prevent the reinstatement of tolls on the Mount Hope Bridge.    It was introduced by Senators Louis DiPalma, Walter S. Felag Jr., Christopher S. Ottiano, David E. Bates and Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed. How the Bridges are Paid for Today A quasi-public agency, called the Rhode Island Transportation and Bridge Authority (RITBA), is responsible for the Newport Pell Bridge and the Mount Hope Bridge. Its five-member board is appointed by the governor.   Currently, RIBTA does not receive state or local tax revenue. It pays for the maintenance of …
