The following has been provided by Cranston-Calvert Elementary School: Cranston-Calvert Elementary School fourth-grader and Feinstein Jr. Scholar Kailey Allen has set a very high bar as far as citizenship is concerned. Kailey and her family are with the Navy and moved to Newport from California in early October. She was not here even a month before hurricane Sandy hit the northeast, but never the less she very moved by what she saw on the news and jumped into action. Kailey asked her teacher, Stephanie DeAscentis, if she could start a clothing and coat drive to help the victims of hurricane Sandy in New York. Finance Director Laura Sitrin presented her findings after evaluated the Newport School Department's business office.
City Finance Manager Laura Sitrin presented her findings regarding an evaluation of the school department's business office during a joint workshop between the Newport School Committee and the Newport City Council on Wednesday night. The evaluation was at the request of the School Committee and the City Council after questions about the efficiency of the school's business office arose earlier this year. The report included observations and recommendations from Sitrin to address process issues in the business office. Parents of a girl who went unaccounted for at the beginning of the school year addressed the Newport School Committee during Tuesday night's meeting.
Bus company First Student could be on the chopping block after the Newport school system received complaints from parents that students were not on the correct bus or accounted for. The complaints have prompted the Newport School Committee to seriously question First Student's services. John and Michelle Brennan, parents of a kindergarten student at Underwood Elementary School, are not happy with First Student after their daughter went unaccounted for two days in a row at the beginning of the school year. The Brennans addressed the Newport School Committee during Tuesday night's meeting to vent their frustrations with certain staff members of the bus company. The Newport City Council approved the FY 2012-2013 budget proposal during it's meeting on Wednesday.
The Newport City Council unanimously approved the FY2012-2013 budget during Wednesday's meeting, which included at 2.5 percent property tax increase, level funding the school committee and a 2.47 percent general expenditure increase. Alliance for a Livable Newport Treasurer Ron Becker addressed the council and commended their work on the budget proposal. Becker said his biggest complaint of past years' budgets has been the mismatching of revenues and expenses. He told the council that this year's proposal had done a good job of matching the two. The proposed combined expenditures for all funds is $115,754,174, a $20.6 million decrease from last year due to decreases in capital spending for the new Pell Elementary School. The total general…

The 1973 Rogers High School Track team requested to name the track and field facilities after their former coach, Charlie Gibbons.
The Newport School Committee unanimously voted suspend the policy to create a subcommittee beforing naming the track and field facilies at Rogers High School after former track coach Charlie Gibbons during its meeting on Tuesday night. Gibbons coached the 1973 track and field team, which will be inducted in the Rogers High School Athletic Hall of Fame on May 19. The 1973 Boys Track team was the only team in Rogers history to win the State Indoor, State Outdoor and New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the same year. “It’s a great honor,” school committee Robert Leary said of his former coach. A group of students planted a tree at a local park for Arbor Day.
A group of students from Rogers High School planted a tree at Morton Park on Friday in honor of Arbor Day. Mayor Stephen Waluk also attended the event, as the students dug up a spot and planted the park's newest tree. "It went great!" Horticulture teacher Scott Dickison said of the event.

Scott Dickison and his students are planning several rain gardens on the Rogers High School campus.
Since Rogers High School horticulture teacher Scott Dickison presented plans for rain gardens on the school’s campus during a recent school committee meeting, a lot has been going on behind the scenes. Dickison has been applying for grants, seeking out volunteers to donate time and resources, and spreading the word about the project around town. He and his class have targeted four initial areas to implement rain gardens: one in the front of the school and three near the faculty and student parking lot. The position of the gardens are based on their proximity to the storm drains. The following is a press release localized for Newport. The Rhode Island Campaign for Achievement Now (RI-CAN) released its 2012 School Report Cards for 300 Rhode Island public schools. Check out the results for the Newport school district. In the overall elementary school rankings, Underwood Elementary School ranked fourteenth in the state. Cranston-Calvert Elementary School ranked forty-fifth, Coggeshall Elementary School ranked sixtieth, and the former Sullivan School ranked sixty-fifth out of 76. Members of the Newport School Committee and City Council Liaison Committee talked Pell School updates, shared services, and budgets during Wednesday’s meeting at City Hall. The first item on the agenda was the use of existing schools that will be closed as a result of the opening of the Claiborne D. Pell Elementary School in 2013. City Manager Jane Howington said the city has talked in concept about how to have the buildings opened again and the school and city departments should work together to try to get some planning done. “When we do an assessment, it may shed light on which buildings will be more marketable or have the highest revenue,” she said.
