The Newport Historical Society saved a 1950 class photo of Rogers High School students.
A small piece of Rogers High School history has been saved thanks to the Newport Historical society. A class photo from 1950 that was fused to glass was carefully removed with just a tub a water and a razor by NHS archivist Stacie Parillo. View the photo and Parillo's process in the gallery above.

The NHS is requesting residents to submit their photos of before, during, and after Superstorm Sandy.
Did you take any photos or videos of the affects of Superstorm Sandy on Newport County? The Newport Historical Society wants them! The Newport Historical Society posted on its Facebook page: The Newport Historical Society is looking to collect media of Hurricane Sandy that the community has captured in Newport County. In this era of prevalent, but often unpreserved, digital media we’d like to be certain to document the “Frankenstorm.” We are specifically looking for photographs and videos of any hurricane preparations, the storm itself, and its aftermath, including boarding up windows, high wind and surf, fallen trees, damage and debris. Newport Historical Society and Middletown Historical Society partner to launch a new book about Middletown.
A lifelong student of history and a former professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature has leveraged her passion for historical research to preserve the images and memories of the families that defined Middletown. “I've never written a book like this before,” said Christine Haverington, author of the book Images of America Middletown that was released last month. As a professor at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY, Haverington has published books and papers, but said they were all academic. This is her first book that appeals to a wider audience, she said. The book is a chapter in the Images in America series, sponsored by Arcadia Publishing. The Newport Historical Society is preparing to launch a web-based mobile app designed to help visitors take an annotated walk around the City’s historic streets—whether exploring by foot or surfing from their sofa. The Society has partnered with Lila Delman Real Estate, which is the Founding Sponsor of the app. Lila Delman Real Estate has been honored with preservation awards for the restoration of its Newport and Narragansett offices. “As dedicated supporters of historic preservation, Lila Delman Real Estate is a natural partner in this project. The society is working to conserve the piece, which is in fragile condition.
The Newport Historical Society has an extensive collection of documents about Newport’s early history. Today the Society acquired a very important letter that further broadens its diverse collection. This letter was written by a late 18th and early 19th century African American Newporter named Occarmar Marycoo, also known as Newport Gardner. In the October 1821 letter, purchased with funds from board member donations, Gardner writes to his niece Sarah Burk in Alexandria, VA.
