U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Representative David Cicilline announced Tuesday a $343,224 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for the Newport Fire Department. The grant money will be used to purchase new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus units for Newport firefighters. Breathing apparatus units protect firefighters who face extreme heat, toxic gases, and low-oxygen levels when they combat flames and rescue residents from burning buildings. Due to budget constraints, the Newport Fire Department’s planned replacement of its current, outdated, breathing apparatus units would have been a multiyear process. There is an elevated risk of fire in Newport County on Saturday. Aquidneck Island fire departments have issued outdoor burning bands.
The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Newport County, stating that high pressure and dry conditions have elevated fire risk. Middletown and Portsmouth have issued bans on all outdoor burning on Saturday; outdoor fires in Newport are not allowed without a permit. According to the statement, minimum afternoon relative humidity will drop to between 15 and 25 percent by early this afternoon. Northwest wind gusts of 20 to 25 mph are expected through midday. Officials have advised that fuels, grasses and leaf litter will be very susceptible to ignition. A kitchen fire that broke out on Sunday morning at 57 Merton Road caused thousands in damage. All occupants were able to escape safely.
Newport firefighters responded to a house fire at 57 Merton Road at 1:32 a.m. on Sunday morning. The fire resulted in approximately $50,000 in damage to the house. The owner of the home called 911 after being awoken by the smoke alarm and reported that a fire had broken out in the kitchen. Newport Fire Department officials said the fire was in the vicinity of the countertop and upper cabinets in the kitchen. There was heavy smoke throughout the house when firefighters arrived, but they were able to extinguish it quickly. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen, however smoke damage was apparent throughout the two-story home. Newport firefighters responded to a fire at 19 Weaver Ave. around 6:40 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to a report released on Monday night. There were no reported injuries. Fire and smoke damage was confined to one of the two double garage units at the east end of the building, including on the first floor and a woodshop on the second floor. The 9,520 square foot complex also contained a vacant apartment and a construction company with associated shop and storage space, which were not damaged. A fire broke out at 80-82 Kay Blvd. on Tuesday night.
A fire that broke out Tuesday night on Kay Boulevard was ruled not suspicious, police and fire officials say. The fire broke out at 8:09 p.m. and was extinguished by 9 p.m. There were no injuries. The residents of the duplex at 80-82 Kay Blvd. were evacuated and the home has been deemed uninhabitable. The fire began in the back of the duplex and caused heavy damage to the rear, reports said. Damage caused by the fire is estimated to be between $20,000 and $30,000. According to police reports, one of the residents of 82 Kay Blvd. had been cleaning the embers from his fireplace. Police and firefighters responded to a house fire around 1 a.m. this morning.
An early morning fire on Bedlow Avenue has been ruled suspicious, police reports say. A family of six, including a two-year-old, were inside at the time of the fire, but escaped with no injuries. Police were dispatched to 18 Bedlow Ave. at approximately 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday morning for a house fire. The Newport Fire Department was on the scene when they arrived. The front corner of the house was engulfed in flames and had spread to the roof. It was contained to the east side of the home and was extinguished quickly, reports said. One man was killed and nine were displaced after a fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Pineapple Inn.
A man in his early fifties was killed in a structure fire at the Pineapple Inn early Sunday morning, fire officials said. One firefighter sustained a smoke inhalation injury and was transported to Newport Hospital where he was treated and released. The Newport Fire Department responded to the fire when it was reported via 911 by a caller from the inn after the fire alarm went off. First responding crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door and windows of a single motel room at the inn. Neighbors crowded along busy Broadway early Friday evening as Newport firefighters quickly extinguished an apartment fire above Creative Nails II. Crews were called to 152 Broadway, a three-story building, just after 6 p.m. Firefighters arriving witnessed smoke emanating from the third-floor windows. "There was smoke showing," said Deputy Chief Frank Young. "The smoke was coming from the third floor. The windows were open." A fire broke out at 111-113 Washington St. early this morning.
A fire broke out at Harbor House on Washington Street around 5:45 a.m. today, fire officials said. There were no injuries. Harbor House, a retirement community, is located at 111-113 Washington Street. According to Fire Marshal Wayne Clark, the fire started in a flower pot on the first floor porch. Clark said the fire was likely started by "an improperly disposed of smoking device". At Harbor House, five flower pots were n tact. One was left charred and smoky.
