The Newport County Chamber of Commerce released a statement recognizing the positive impact marriage equality would have on the local economy.
The Board of Directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement endorsing same-sex marriage legislation in Rhode Island. The NCCC said in its release that it recognizes “the positive economic impact seen by the hospitality and wedding industries in states, including our neighboring New England states, with marriage equality.” “Marriage equality could have a substantial positive economic impact on our members, especially in the hospitality and wedding industries,” said Laura F. The Board of Directors of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce has unanimously voted to oppose any and all tolls or toll increases on both the Newport Pell Bridge and the Sakonnet River Bridge. Any additional tolls would place an additional and unfair burden on Newport Pell and Sakonnet Bridge users, especially Aquidneck Island businesses, residents, and border state commuters. The board voted in opposition of the two percent increase in Meals & Beverage tax.

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted at their February Board meeting to oppose passage of the two percent increase in the Meals & Beverage tax contained in the Governor’s 2013 budget. The hospitality industry is a key economic driver in the state of Rhode Island and one of the few industries currently experiencing growth coming out of the long recession.
