SOUND OFF: Bike Lanes on Memorial, Safer or Short Sighted?

The DOT installed new bike lanes on Memorial Boulevard last week. Residents have expressed mixed feelings about the project.

Last week, as part of several projects across the island, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) installed new bike lanes on Memorial Boulevard. Some residents said they were surprised that the project removed a lane of traffic on the westbound side of the road, starting at Aquidneck Avenue until Rhode Island Avenue. "The idea of the change was to make things safer for cyclists, but I fear the change may make it more dangerous for cars and bikes, " said resident Darcy Roland. "This will be especially true in the summer months." The project was influenced by local advocacy group, Bike Newport, after a car hit and killed Middletown resident Elliot Kaminitz last June.  Although the intention is to make the road safer for …

RIDOT to Make Improvements to Congested Newport Intersections

RIDOT is investing $10 million in safety enhancements around Rhode Island, including intersections in Newport and Middletown.

With the summer season is approaching, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has been focused on making roadways safer for Ocean State motorists by investing $10 million in several safety enhancements, with additional improvements planned for the future. The Department plans on making improvements to overly-congested intersections on Aquidneck Island, including the America’s Cup Avenue and Memorial Boulevard corridors in downtown Newport, and the conversion of Coddington Highway in Middletown from a four lane roadway to a three lane (one lane in each direction and a center-turn lane) roadway with dedicated bike lanes. The traffic lights at Memorial Blvd.and Bellevue Ave are finally doing what they should. The traffic going in two opposite directions was really bad. Now there is a arrow turning left to go down towards the beach. Much safer. Thank-you to the persons who came up with this idea.   more ›

Woman With Gun Suspected Relations Between Victim, Husband

Police said Jennifer Allen was suspicious of a personal connection between an employee of Franklin & Company Design Associates and Allen's husband, which led her to the confrontation on Memorial Boulevard.

Police say the Tiverton woman who attacked an employee at Franklin & Co, then shot and killed herself last Tuesday was suspcious that the victim had a personal relationship with her husband. Newport Police Sgt. Christopher Hayes said Jennifer Allen, 32, of Tiverton, targeted Frances “Amy” Pattavina, 28, of Newport, due to suspicions of a personal relationship between her and Allen’s husband, Steve Viveiros. Allen went to Pattavina’s office and confronted her and several other employees while wielding both a knife and 9mm gun. Allen stabbed Pattavina twice and inflicted a head wound before turning the gun on herself, police report.   Pattavina told police there was no personal history between she and Viveiros. “There was some communication …

Newport Police say the woman with the gun eventually died from a self-inflicted wound.

A 32-year-old Tiverton woman walked into Franklin & Company Interiors Tuesday morning with a gun and threatened to shoot people inside before confronting one woman with a knife and gun and asking her how she wanted to die. Tuesday's shooting/stabbing incident ultimately ended with that 32-year-old woman—Jennifer Allen of Tiverton—dying from a self-inflicted gun shot wound, Newport Police announced Wednesday. Police say they first received a call Tuesday reporting that a woman was inside the office building threatening people with a handgun. Newport police have recovered a gun from the Tuesday morning shooting at Franklin & Company Interiors.

Newport police have recovered a gun possibly used in the shooting at Franklin & Company Interiors Tuesday morning. The shooting, which took place at 11 Memorial Blvd., was between two women who knew each other, police officials say. Lt. William Fitzgerald said police also believe a knife was used during the incident, but he did not know if one has been recovered yet. Police Remove Body from Crime Scene on Memorial Boulevard

The medical examiner arrived at 11 Memorial Blvd. around 1:45 p.m.

Police were seen Tuesday afternoon removing a body bag from 11 Memorial Blvd., home to Franklin & Co. Interiors., where a fatal shooting and stabbing incident took place hours before. The medical examiner arrived on the scene around 1:45 p.m. The body was transported from the building into a truck and was taken away around 2:20 p.m. One woman was shot dead and another was brought to the hospital for injuries following the incident. The situation has since been contained, police officials said. Newport Police officials also said weapons were found on the scene, but no further details have been released. Newport residents and Salve Regina University students have taken to Twitter to react to the news that a shooting/stabbing occurred off Memorial Boulevard Tuesday morning. Salve Regina University issued an alert to students at 10:46 a.m. letting students know about the incident and advising them to stay on campus.
