RIDEM held a public workshop to discuss a proposed 240-foot fixed pier at Fort Adams on Wednesday night.
City and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management officials, along with members of the public met at City Hall on Wednesday night for a workshop to discuss the proposed fixed pier at Fort Adams State Park. The 240-foot pier and wave fence would be constructed north of the Alofsin piers near the Visitor’s Center. The project is a part of Phase III out of IV in the improvement and renovation of Fort Adams. Spurred by the necessity to revamp the site to accommodate special events, such as last summer’s America’s Cup races, the Fort has undergone repaving and drastically upgrading its facilities. President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed and members of the McKenna family were joined by Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and Newport officials at Fort Adams State Park on Friday for the official dedication of the new Robert J. McKenna Boulevard. The roadway, typically utilized by pedestrian traffic, stretches from the Fort Adams State Park Visitor’s Center to the west gate of the fort. Fort Adams is closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels.

The Department of Health (HEALTH) recommends the closure of Fort Adams State Park in Newport to swimming due to high bacteria counts. Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend re-opening when the areas are safe for swimming. Water quality analysis is conducted by the HEALTH laboratory or a state certified laboratory.
The project aims to control invasive plant species and enhance the water quality in Brenton Cove.

America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) sailors, staff, media, and volunteers planted Rhode Island native trees and shrubs at a newly constructed rain garden at Fort Adams State Park. This green infrastructure project is designed to mitigate storm water runoff from paved areas at Fort Adams State Park, enhance water quality in Brenton Cove, control invasive plant species, and enhance the park’s landscaping with native Rhode Island vegetation.
