Merton Road Fire Causes $50K in Damage

A kitchen fire that broke out on Sunday morning at 57 Merton Road caused thousands in damage. All occupants were able to escape safely.

Newport firefighters responded to a house fire at 57 Merton Road at 1:32 a.m. on Sunday morning. The fire resulted in approximately $50,000 in damage to the house. The owner of the home called 911 after being awoken by the smoke alarm and reported that a fire had broken out in the kitchen.  Newport Fire Department officials said the fire was in the vicinity of the countertop and upper cabinets in the kitchen. There was heavy smoke throughout the house when firefighters arrived, but they were able to extinguish it quickly. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen, however smoke damage was apparent throughout the two-story home.  A family of five and an unrelated tenant who lived in an attached apartment were home at the time. Weaver Avenue Fire Causes $150K in Damage

The fire, which broke out on Saturday morning, caused thousands in damage but resulted in no injuries.

Newport firefighters responded to a fire at 19 Weaver Ave. around 6:40 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to a report released on Monday night. There were no reported injuries. Fire and smoke damage was confined to one of the two double garage units at the east end of the building, including on the first floor and a woodshop on the second floor. The 9,520 square foot complex also contained a vacant apartment and a construction company with associated shop and storage space, which were not damaged. The fire was reported by a resident living on East Bowery Street who saw smoke and flames coming from the rear of the home. No Injuries in Fire at Kay Boulevard Duplex

A fire broke out at 80-82 Kay Blvd. on Tuesday night.

A fire that broke out Tuesday night on Kay Boulevard was ruled not suspicious, police and fire officials say. The fire broke out at 8:09 p.m. and was extinguished by 9 p.m. There were no injuries. The residents of the duplex at 80-82 Kay Blvd. were evacuated and the home has been deemed uninhabitable. The fire began in the back of the duplex and caused heavy damage to the rear, reports said. Damage caused by the fire is estimated to be between $20,000 and $30,000. According to police reports, one of the residents of 82 Kay Blvd. had been cleaning the embers from his fireplace. He told police he placed them in a fire pan outside and watered them down around 11 a.m. that morning. The incident remains under investigation by the Newport Fire …
