Code Red Update from Newport Emergency Management
A Code Red Alert was issued at 1 p.m.
This is a Code Red informational update from Newport Emergency Management. Hurricane Sandy is expected to come ashore in mid-New Jersey this evening. Rhode Island will be experiencing strong, sustained winds with moderate rain accumulations through tonight into tomorrow morning. Possible winds after 5:00 p.m. could cause the bridges to close. High tides tonight and tomorrow morning will create flooding situations in low lying and coastal areas. The sustained winds make these areas hazardous. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) and the City of Newport continue to strongly encourage residents in waterfront and flood-prone areas to evacuate. Waves offshore are currently 25 to 35 feet—please stay out of the water and away …
