The Preservation Society's Christmas celebration ends today.
Now that we're into the New Year, The Preservation Society of Newport County is wrapping up its Christmas celebration at the Newport mansions. If you were too busy this season to see these beautiful displays, you've got one last chance today. The Breakers, the Elms and the Marble House are all open through 5 p.m. for one final viewing of the the dazzling holiday decor. The Breakers opens at 9 a.m., The Elms and Marble House at 10 a.m. The last tour admission is at 4 p.m., with the grounds and houses closing at 5. Admission to all three mansions is $28 for adults, $9 for children ages 6 to 17. A trip to just The Breakers is $19.50, $5.50 for children. Cost is $14.50 for adults, $5.50 for children, for the other two homes. Don't miss this …

A look at what's happening in and around Newport today.
The Bit Players will perform a special Family-friendly Improv Show tonight at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse Theater. Admission is $10 per adult, $8 per senior, and $5 per student. Non-alcoholic refreshments are included in the price or BYOB for those of age. StageRightRI and William Heydt are holding a casting call for upcoming historical painting reenactments of Newportant people at the Edward King House from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight. All are welcome to attend. Production volunteers, researchers, historians, costume makers, make-up artists, hairdressers, and more volunteers are needed as well. Historic private Newport homes will be open for Candlelight Tours as part of Christmas in Newport tonight from 4 to 7 p.m. Tonight’s open houses are at 264 Gibbs Avenue, 33 Farewell Street, and 34 Malbone Road. Admission is $3 per house and is payable at the front door of each home. Touro Synagogue will be holding a Community Hanukkah Candle Lighting at 7:30 p.m. in the Levi Gale House to celebrate the eighth night of Hanukkah. Latkes and desserts will be served following the ceremony. Beach House is having an after-Christmas sale starting today, with 20 percent off storewide and 50 percent off of Christmas items. There will be no school at Rogers High School today so that parent-teacher conferences can be held. The Jane Pickens Theatre will host a free screening of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer at 5:30 p.m. with the first 60 people receiving free reindeer noses. The official start of Christmas in Newport will kick-off with the Washington Square Tree Lighting featuring live entertainment, a cannon salute by the Newport Artillery, and an appearance by the Mayor at 6 p.m. The Colony House will also be open for free tours from 5 to 6 p.m. Green Drinks Newport will hold its monthly gathering at Patagonia on Thames with guest speaker Andrew Fish of Preserve, the company that recycles number 5 plastics.
