The workshop begins tonight at 6:30 at City Hall.
BikeNewport.me is encouraging the community to come to the City Council workshop tonight on bicycle safety. To gather feedback, Bike Newport requests both bicyclists and non-bicyclists to fill out a survey on their experiences riding in Newport. Questions include how often residents ride, reasons for bikings and rating experiences with other bicyclists, drivers and the City. Bari George, of Bike Newport, said there has already been a great community response with more than one hundred surveys completed with substantial feedback. According to BikeNewport.me, the workshop is an "opportunity for residents to share their ideas, experiences, concerns and vision related to bicycling in Newport." Complete the survey here. As a step to develop Newport into a city that encourages cycling and enforces safe riding, Bike Newport hosted a class for Newport community leaders taught by the League of American Bicyclists to learn proper rules of the road. "We asked everyone to participate as three people: as themselves, as advocates for their constituent group, and as a visitor in Newport, unfamiliar with our roads,” said organizer and instructor Allison McNally. “Those perspectives changed the way we all saw the riding experience and we gained a lot more insight.” Instructor Ken Ruscetta stood with observers on the corner of Memorial Boulevard and Bellevue Avenue, and pointed out illegal and potentially unsafe maneuvers of unassociated cyclists who happened to …

The police department is working with Bike Newport to help bikers learn and enforce the rules of the road.
The Newport Police Department’s Community Policing Unit in partnership with Bike Newport is reaching out to educate and inform cyclists and motorists alike about the correct and safe way to share the road. The standard rules of the road for cars are required knowledge to earn a drivers license.But what are the rules of the road for bicycles? The answer is simple: the same rules apply to cars and bicycles. If you can’t do it in a car, don’t do it on your bicycle. Some highlights: Bike Newport is assisting the NPD to get the word out to inform bicyclists of RI law and Newport ordinances by printing the rules on handouts, in both English and Spanish, to educate cyclists in advance of warnings and/or fines.
