Young Newport Athletes Pitch, Hit and Run in MLB Contest

Young baseball and softball players participated in pitching, hitting and running contests at the Aquafina “Pitch, Hit, & Run” event on Monday evening

Eighteen Newport athletes between the ages of 7 and 14 gathered on the foggy Toppa Field Monday night to showcase pitching, hitting and running skills in the Aquafina Pitch, Hit, & Run contest, which was sponsored by Major League Baseball. Winners for each age group (7-8, 8-9, 9-10, 11-12) were determined in four divisions: pitching, hitting, running and overall, for both baseball and softball.   The contest can send up to thirty-two boys and girls to the state finals competition on May 21 at McCoy stadium, home of the Pawtucket Red Sox .   “What is nice about the Rhode Island competition is that the PawSox really support the event," said Susan Cooper, Director of the Newport Recreation Department, which has hosted the contest for the past…

Newport Legion Team Falls From State Playoffs

R&R American Legion baseball team eliminated 10-8 by West Warwick.

The R&R Construction of Newport American Legion baseball team got off to a great start but couldn't sustain the pace during Wednesday's state quarterfinal game against West Warwick. Following an RBI double by Kevin Galvin and a two-RBI double by Mark Ventura, Newport had a 3-0 lead after two innings. West Warwick responded, however, with a pair of run-producing singles in the top of the third, before getting a huge boost the next inning. With two runners on first and second, West Warwick's Dan Smith sent a towering shot over the right centerfield fence to propel West Warwick to a 4-3 lead. Newport responded  in the bottom half of the inning via small ball; Matthew Wojichowski led off the inning with a single and advanced into scoring …

Newport Closes Out Playoff Series With 8-5 Victory

One day after a blowout victory, the American Legion squad wins a close one to advance in the summer playoffs.

R and R Construction (Newport) and Navigant Credit Union (Woonsocket) met at Gaudet School in Middletown Sunday for the tiebreaker of their three-game playoff series. This was an evenly matched game in which the lead was exchanged twice and good pitching was a key before the locals pulled out an 8-5 victory. Unlike Saturday's 22-7 rout by Newport at Cardines Field, Navigant held a lead through the fourth inning, when they were ahead 2-1. The scoring began in the bottom of the third when a sharply hit single by Newport's Kevin Galvin scored Matt Murphy, who had led off the inning. In the top of the fourth, a searing home run by Woonsocket's Melvin Torres scored "Bam Bam" Rodriguez. Newport put all nine up to the plate in the fifth and …

Grounds Crew and Legion Team Are Big Winners

After hours of maintenance to a rain-soaked field, Newport's American Legion team dumped an offensive deluge on Woonsocket.

The American Legion regional baseball tournament continued on Saturday, July 24, when No. 2 seed Newport hosted No. 15 seed Woonsocket at rain-soaked Cardines Field.  The final score supported the seedings as R & R Construction (Newport) crushed Navigant Credit Union (Woonsocket) 22-7. According to Newport city employee Bob Lendrum, who has been in charge of field maintenance at Cardines field for three years, "it took four guys 6 hours," to get the field into playing shape. Heavy rains, which postponed the game on Friday night, flooded the field and standing water greeted Lendrum and his crew when they arrived at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Lendrum, who is also the commissioner of the George D. Donnelly Sunset League, noted that the heroic …
