The RIEDC says that the construction to prepare Fort Adams for the America's Cup is 75 percent complete and on schedule to be completed by May 1.
“Who has anything like this?” asked Keith Stokes, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC), as he walked through the active construction projects at Fort Adams State Park on Wednesday morning. Stokes said that although Newport has lacked the infrastructure to attract maritime activities in the past, the projects will not only make Newport a competitive venue, but with its history, charm and sailing conditions, Newport will rise into a league of its own. “It’s Newport," he said. "It’s a place people want to be." In November 2010, the RIEDC posted a request for proposal to hire an engineering firm to develop plans for a two-phase project including land and marine upgrades at the park. A $662,000 …
Although the America's Cup Authority recently announced changes to the upcoming event in Newport, the America's Cup Host Committee said the event will still begin on June 23 as scheduled.
The chairman of Newport's America’s Cup Host Committee said Wednesday that although the first few days of the local events have been modified into unstructured practice days, the overall timeline has not changed. Brad Read, who also serves as Executive Director of Sail Newport, said the Event Village, complete with champagne gardens, educational centers, shopping, spectator viewing and food concessions, will still open at Fort Adams on Saturday, June 23, per the original plan. Still, he said of the changes to the first few days: "it's not secret the committee is watching expenses." This news comes a few weeks after the announcement of a significant scale-back of the final America's Cup events in San Francisco, including the layoff of 28 …

Evan Smith and Mayor Waluk sat down with Patch to what Newport can expect next summer, after their visit to the series in Plymouth, England a few weeks ago.
High-energy, engaging, and high-tech. That's the experience Aquidneck Island residents can look forward to during the America's Cup event next summer, Newport city officials say. Those were the words used by both Mayor Stephen Waluk and Evan Smith, President of Newport Convention and Visitors Bureau, to describe their visit to the series held in Plymouth, England a few weeks ago. “It was a highlight to understand the mechanics of how they prepared at every level for the whole event,” Smith said. “So we were students, studying, really every aspect of that.” Waluk said he believes the event will attract both ardent sailing fans and non-sailors alike. “I think people are going to be struck by how contemporary it all is,” said Smith. “…
