Community Forum on Shoreline Bikeway this Thursday Night

There will be a public forum on the proposed creation of an island-wide multi-use bike trail at the CCRI Auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.

Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) and Bike Newport will host a public forum on the proposed creation of an island-wide multi-use bike trail at the CCRI Auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. The presentation and discussion will be led by Carl Knoch, Manager of Trail Development for Rails-To-Trails Conservancy, the national voice for rail trails based in Washington, DC. Knoch is an expert on the creation and economic impact of multi-use rail trails across the country. The forum will focus on Rail With Trail, a potential recreational path alongside the rail currently used by the Old Colony Railway and the Newport Dinner Train. AIPC Study Says Newport is Aquidneck Island's Largest Public Land Owner of Open Space

The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission releases its first census of Aquidneck Island's open space.

The following is from a press release issued by the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission.  The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission(AIPC) has released the first comprehensive census of the island’s open space, including farmland, recreation areas, schools and vacant land.  In a report issued on Tuesday, AIPC maps and analyzes Aquidneck Island’s parks, beaches, farms, ponds and reservoirs, playing fields, and other areas with little or no development. The report is the final product of a year-long project to identify Aquidneck Island’s open space with the goal of providing information that will help the island’s communities and policymakers plan for future development, expand recreational opportunities, and protect key watersheds. AIPC Makes Recommendations to Improve Traffic

The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission (AIPC) released recommendations to improve traffic across the island based on a 24-month long study.

Immediate and long-term proposals to alleviate island-wide traffic problems were revealed Thursday night when the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission released the results of its two-year island-wide traffic study. Streamlined communications and training between the three local communities emerged as a cornerstone to many of the recommendations, along with improved communications with the traveling public. Not surprising given previous public feedback, the increased use of multi-media communications technology, expanding public transportation systems—by land and by sea—and creating more remote parking locations also were included among the study's recommendations.
