Sullivan opened its doors in 1955 and underwent expansions in 1967 and 1969 to accommodate increased enrollment. It's also undergone several renovations in recent years. According to a Rhode Island Department of Education School Accountability for Learning and Teaching (SALT) report, Sullivan is the only "neighborhood" elementary school in Newport, with approximately 80 percent of its students coming from the residential areas around the school.
