Newport police divide the city into four patrol areas:
Northwest: The west side of Broadway from One Mile Corner to Summer Street, the north side of Van Zandt, the Point Section, and Tonomy Hill/Park Holm.
Northeast: The east side of Broadway to Old Beach Road, Washington Square and America's Cup Avenue.
Central: Washington Square south to Narragansett Avenue.
South: Everything south of Narragansett Avenue.
Smaller beat assignments are assigned to the business district, and foot and bike patrols monitor lower Thames Street during tourist season.
The Newport Police Department subscribes to the community policing philosophy, and in fact in 1989 was the first department in the state of Rhode Island to do so. The community policing unit has four patrol officers, each assigned to a specific section of the city. To view their beats, go here.
In addition to patrol, the department also has a crime investigation division, traffic unit and internal affairs. It also oversees Newport's animal control.
