ALN Forum Examines Single-Stream Recycling

The Alliance for a Livable Newport held a public forum on the single-stream recycling system coming to Newport this summer.

Local and state officials introduced the new single-stream recycling system that will be implemented in Newport this June during a forum presented by the Alliance for a Livable Newport on Tuesday night at the Newport Public Library. The forum also explained how to reduce and recycle items that are difficult to dispose of, such as paint, mattresses, light bulbs and batteries. Sarah Kite, Director of Recycling Services for the Rhode Island Resource and Recovery Corporation, Kristin Littlefield, Clean City Coordinator for the City of Newport, Ellie Leonardsmith of RI Clean Water Action, and Victor Bell, President of Environmental Packaging International, sat on the panel. Newport Settlement Day Flag Raising Rescheduled

The flag raising ceremonies will be rescheduled for Friday, May 18.

Due to weather considerations, the Newport Love-Flag Raising, celebrating Newport Settlement Day, the 373rd anniversity of May 16, 1639, has been re-scheduled to Friday, May 18.  This historic observance marks the occasion when the first settlers formally met and named ye Towne: "Newport".  This year's observance is, however, on Friday, May the 18.    The observance will include three continuous events. This is an original Newportant Foundation Reenactment under the surrendering direction of George Brian Sullivan, Ph.D., A.k.a., Doctor Love, Amorior General. Newport Police Log: Man Allegedly Punches Out Pelham Window, Warrant Arrest

The following information was provided by the Newport Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Jared M. Kelly, 22, of 17671 Deer Isle Circle, Winter Garden, FL., was arrested around 1:08 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, for a vandalism charge. Police were called when Pelham employees allegedly saw Kelly punch a window and break it.  Warrant arrest Lukasz Kotarbinksi, 22, of 15 Meeting St., Newport, was arrested around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, for an active warrant for failure to appear in court with ability to pay. The above reports detail arrests made by the Newport Police Department. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Newport Bicycle Gets a Colorful Paint Job

Artist Reva Golden completed the mural at Newport Bicycle over the weekend.

Have you noticed that Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard is a lot more colorful lately? Artist Reva Golden — recently moved back to Boulder, CO., after completing the work — completed a mural on the street-side wall of Newport Bicycle last Sunday, owner Christina Erwin said. The mural depicts the best of both bicycling and Newport, including a bicyclist, the Newport Bridge, waves and the Route 138 sign. Golden's artwork was completed just in time to inspire the community to participate in Bike Newport’s second annual Bike to Work Day, taking place all day on Friday, May 18.

Navy League Military Appreciation Night Gala Well Attended

The Newport County Council of the Navy League held its 55th Annual Military Appreciation Night at the Atlantic Beach Club.

The Newport County Council of the Navy League of the U.S. recently held their 55th Military Appreciation Night at the Atlantic Beach Club. A group of approximately 300 Navy League members, local business representatives and Military guests attended the even, including Philip Dunmire, the National President of the Navy League, Washington, DC to help the local council recognize Newport area Military personnel. The guest speaker was the Honorable Juan M. Garcia, III, Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). He addressed the ever-changing personnel needs of the Sea Services. Big Brothers Big Sisters Donation Center Celebrates Grand Opening

Big Brothers Big Sisters opened their second Rhode Island center in Middletown on Friday.

It's official - Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State (BBBSOS) has a home in Middletown. The new donation center celebrated its grand opening at the Airport Plaza at 1341 West Main Road in Middletown on Friday. The center is the second location in Rhode Island, where Aquidneck island residents can drop-off donations of gently used clothing and small household items.  The location will also be headquarters of the Military Mentoring Program that will launch this summer. Rogers High School Ranks 21 in GoLocalProv Top High School List

Rogers High School ranked 21 out of 51 Rhode Island schools.

Rogers High Schools ranks as the number 21 high school in the state, according to GoLocalProv’s Third Annual Top High Schools list, which was released on Monday. The list included public, charter and technical schools, which factored reading, math and writing proficiency, student to teacher ratio, spending per student, four-year graduation rates, average verbal, math and writing SAT scores into the rankings. Rogers High School charted the highest spending per student, at $18,732 in 2009-2010. View the complete list here. There has been a clear demise in the quality of education in Portsmouth. As I said, Portsmouth was top-rated in the state, now it is not. Portsmouth is ranked lower than other school districts with similar socio-economic make-ups. It spends less per students There has been continued cuts in classes and school services.
