<p>Founded in 1854, the Newport Historical Society has a vast collection of manuscripts, portraits, furniture, art and other mementos from the area's past.</p>
<p>The society originated as the "Southern Cabinet" of the Rhode Island Historical Society until 1853, when several prominent Newporters recognized the need for a separate collection focused on Newport County. The contents of the Southern Cabinet were then reorganized as the Newport Historical Society.</p> <p>Today, the society's collection continues to grow and remains an attraction for residents and tourists alike.</p> <p>Newport Historical Society's headquarters are at this Touro Street location. Walking and historic site tours are offered year-round. An accompanying museum and gift shop are ahead on Thames Street.</p>
