Miantonomi Memorial Park is a 30-acre historic park on the north end of Newport. Its name derives from its history, when the site was part of the territory of the Narragansett Indians. Colonialists used the site as a lookout point and public execution site. In the late 19th century, a family purchased the land, and in 1920s, they sold it to the city for public use. Soonafter the site was dedicated to World War I veterans, and it later became a place for area locals to enjoy recreational activities. The park also features playgrounds, picnic areas and a volleyball court.
