The Tax Assessor's office functions under the laws of Rhode Island and ordinances established by the Newport City Council. Those laws mandate that all property is subject to taxation and is to be assessed at its fair market value. Assessments are usually held each December 31st. Motor vehicles are assessed at the book value price. Taxes are collected for the previous calendar year. New businesses must file with the Assessor's Office.
