Newport summers aren't just about sailing, swimming, surfing, fine dining and fun. There's perhaps no better place for art, history and culture too.

Newport summers aren't just about sailing, swimming, surfing, fine dining and fun. There's perhaps no better place for art, history and culture too.

And some nights, there's no better way to cool off from a hot day by heading inside — to catch a great movie. Or heading outside in the evening hours to catch a flick with newportFILM at its many outdoor venues, such as the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, Rough Point in Newport, Easton's Beach and the Marble House, to name just a few.

That's just one small reason why newportFILM fills such a key niche in the Newport entertainment and arts community. And this summer, they have a deep and expansive lineup of films to keep you cool, entertained and thoughtful all summer long. Here it is:

ABOUT newportFILM Outdoors

"newportFILM Outdoors presented by Kirby Perkins Construction" is a summer long sunset film series that brings the "best of" festival run documentaries out of the traditional theater setting to the most unique landscapes on Aquidneck Island. These events incorporate filmmaker conversations, live music, food vendors (Tallulah’s Taco Cart & Le Petit Gourmet), free bike valets courtesy of Bike Newport, BYO picnicking & more. They are community events open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. The rain venue for “newportFILM Outdoors” events on 7/10 and 7/31 is the Jane Pickens Theater (49 Touro Street, Newport). The rain venue for all other “newportFILM Outdoors” events is the Casino Theater (9 Freebody Street, Newport).

ABOUT newportFILM & Newport Folk Presents™ partnership

During Newport Folk Festival weekend (July 25-26) newportFILM will partner with the Folk Fest for the 3rd year in a row to present 2 music documentaries to create an intimate, one-of-a-kind experience. Heartworn Highways Revisited will screen Friday, July 25. The film will begin at 8:15PM and will be preceded by an optional cocktail hour from 7-8PM. John McCauley of Deer Tick, Langhorne Slim, Andrew Combs & director Wayne Price will be in attendance for a post-film Q&A ($20). The Ballad of Shovels And Rope will screen Saturday, July 26 at 8:15PM. Producer Paul Bannister will be in attendance for a post-film Q&A ($15).

"newportFLM Youth" is an inspiring series that showcases films for ages 2 - 18. We program fresh, fun, kid and family-friendly films all year round to connect kids of all ages to the art, magic and power of film. Kids and families of rhode island and beyond can expect to experience shorts, features, documentaries, world cinema, animation, and more. newportFILM Youth also brings documentaries on the subjects of environmental health, social justice, culture & education directly into schools to explore these topics through the lens of documentary film.
