History Tour Focuses on Queen Anne and Washington Square

Learn about the history of Washington Square and Queen Anne Square

Newport History Tours, a partnership between the Newport Restoration Foundation and the Newport Historical Society, announce the July Tour of the Month – Newport Squared – takes guests back in time to trace the evolution and importance of Washington Square and Queen Anne Square, two centers of Newport’s culture and landscape. The tour takes place July 20 at 11 a.m.

“We are thrilled to present this tour, which traces these two centers of town from the founding of Newport in 1639 through to the present,” explains Liz Spoden, Education and Programs Assistant for the Newport Restoration Foundation. “The tour touches on architecture, commercial activity, the arts and religion and how the ideals and structures have developed and been preserved over time.”

Newport Squared will begin at Brick Market on Thames Street and will conclude at Queen Anne

Square, which has been recently revitalized with an installation by famed artist and architect Maya Lin.

Tickets for the monthly tours are $15; $10 for Newport Historical Society members. Space is limited and reservations are recommended by calling 401.841.8770.  Also, save the date for the August monthly tour, French In Newport, on August 17.

Visit www.NewportHistoryTours.org for more information and complete the daily tour schedule and complete descriptions. Tours last approximately 75 minutes and are weather permitting.

Tickets are $12; $5 for ages 12 & under.
