What Type Of ID Do I Need At The Polls?

Voters in Rhode Island will need to present one of the following forms of ID, according to the R.I. Board of Elections:

Photo ID

• RI Driver's License
• RI Voter ID Card *
• U.S. Passport
• ID issued by a U.S. educational institution
• U.S. military ID
• ID card issued by the United States or the State of Rhode Island
• Government issued medical card
• Employee ID Card
• ID issued by a commercial establishment
• Credit card of debit card containing a photo
• Health club ID card
• Insurance plan identfication card
• Public housng identfication card

*The Rhode Island Secretary of State's office is issuing free voter photo ID cards to individuals who do not possess any of the valid Photo IDs listed above. See the Secretary of State's website for additional information on the program, or call (401) 222-2340.

Non-Photo ID

Except for birth certificates, Social Security cards, and government-issued medical cards, all other non-photo IDs must contain the current name and address of the voter, and must have been issued after the recent general election on Nov. 2, 2010:

• Birth certificate
• Social Security card
• Government-issued medical card
• Utility bill
• Bank statement
• Document issued by a government agency
• Lease or rental statement
• Student ID
• Tuition statement or bill
• Insurance plan card

Any voter who is unable to present valid identification at the polls, will be required to cast a provisional ballot.

Beginning in 2014, only a Photo ID will be acceptable identification in order to vote at the polls.
