What do You Think of Cliff Walk Restroom Area Improvements?

The city is looking for feedback.

The city is in the planning stages to make improvements to the area at the end of Narragansett Avenue and 40 Steps.

The plans include improvements to sidewalks, new concrete sidewalks extending to Ochre Point Ave, an accessible curb ramp, bike racks, new restroom with drinking fountain and bottle filler and portions of pavement replaced with greenscape.

Take a look at the attached plan (click "download .pdf" to grab it) and speak your thoughts.

Has there been a park/public space expert consulted about this? The "green space" situated with two walls between it and the steps / ocean (the feature of this spot) will be dead space. No one wants to hang out on a strip of grass abutting the road & public bathrooms with a series of stone walls separating them from Newport's greatest attraction. In addition, this green space reduces the number of parking spots, and this is one of the few places in town where there is ample and unobtrusive parking. On the plus side, Newport is such a walkable city, I welcome more sidewalks.

Newport is full of attractions that draw hundreds of visitors throughout the year. I applaud any improvement that makes the City better. I suspect that some research may find a sanitation treatment system that would render the waste harmless enough to be discharged into the ocean. That may be a viable option. If not this is a tough one. Just thinking out loud.

This project has been out to bid and the bid ($200k) awarded so why ask now its a done deal....waste to be piped up to Ochre Pt Av, who cleans them and cuts the mud (green area) I do not know....nice idea but as always lacking thought so expect another boarded up shack in a couple of years

I can only assume the greenspace was put in because, if you look at the plan, the restroom building extends into the former roadbed and it would need a buffer from cars so there likely wasn't enough space remaining for parking or turnarounds. If it were me, I would not put in grass. The space would be far better served adding low maintenence flowering shrubs and bulbs with a handicap accessible sidewalk down the middle to the steps. I would also remove the stone wall that's currently there blocking the view down the steps from the road and put some steel horseshoe barricades that would be less obstructive while still preventing cars from driving off of or onto the steps or the cliff walk. They would also be more attractive if they were powdercoated to look like aged copper.
