RIBTA Votes to Delay Toll Increases on Pell and Sakonnet Bridges

In March, the board had voted to raise the toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge from $.10 to $.50 (E-ZPass rate) and $3.75 (non E-ZPass), and on the Newport Pell Bridge from $.83 to $1.04 (E-ZPass rate) to meet its revenue needs.

This morning, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) voted to delay the toll increases on both the Newport Pell Bridge and Sakonnet River Bridge that had been scheduled for May 16.

Stephen Waluk, the acting chairman, said the delay was needed to allow policymakers to make decisions on pending legislation about the future of all four Aquidneck Island bridges. He said that RITBA has enough cash on hand for the agency to pay its bills for the time being.
