Obama Appoints NWC's Carter as Naval Academy Superintendent

During his career, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School and was a "Top Gun" pilot, commander of the USS Carl Vinson, a Navy super carrier and the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group 12.

Read Adm. Walter Carter, who has been leading the Naval War College in Newport since last year, has been selected by President Obama to lead the U.S. Naval Academy.

The defense secretary announced the nomination on Friday.

The nomination is to the position of Vice Admiral and Superintendent of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, taking the place of Vice Admiral Michael H. Miller.

Carter graduated from the Naval Academy in 1981.

During his career, he graduated from the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School and was a "Top Gun" pilot, commander of the USS Carl Vinson, a Navy super carrier and the Enterprise Carrier Strike Group 12.

Carter has flown 125 combat missions and is a native of Burrillville.

Carter said in a Dec., 2013 op ed in the Providence Journal that he was thankful for "the generous citizens and leaders of Rhode Island and the city of Newport who had the vision in 1880 to deed 92 acres of prime land, known as Coasters Harbor Island, to the Navy."

He said the college has remained "adaptive, flexible and relevant," delivering the "best-educated leaders" to the defense department along with allies and friends around the world.

Carter's nomination requires Senate approval and if approved, he would become the 62nd superintendent of the academy.
