Newport State Rep. Peter F. Martin has been named Deputy Majority Leader of the state House of Representatives.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello, who ascended to power last week after the resignation of former speaker Gordon Fox, announced the Martin's appointment this week.

Martin will "work closely with the Majority Leader and Senior Deputy Majority Leader to ensure that party members are properly informed on measures and votes coming before the body," a release stated.

Martin will remain on the House Judiciary Committee and serve as secretary. He was appointed secretary last year. He will also serve on the House Committee on Rules.

The representative is serving his third term in office.
