How Much Does a Snowstorm Cost in Newport?

Newport has spent 35 percent of the snow budget for the current fiscal year.

With snow expected on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the winter of 2013-14 is quickly melting away the snow removal budgets for many Rhode Island communities, including Newport. But just how much does a snow storm cost Newport taxpayers?

According to the finance office, Newport has spent 35 percent of the $190,674 allocated towards this season's snowstorm related expenses.
  • total snowstorm related expenses to-date: $66,939
  • last snowstorm's payroll expenses: $9,689
Newport might need to bring out the plows again this week. Snow accumulations could reach 4 to 8 inches in some areas of the region, according to the National Weather Service.

It would be nice to see the parking ban go into effect much earlier than normal....it works, the main streets are cleared quicker....Newport is always the last one if at all

What I don't understand is why every single year we always hear about the snow budget. It's like the Rhode Island house goes stupid every year when making the budget and puts $5.00 in it and forgets we get snow.
