HEALTH Recommends Closure of Fort Adams State Park to Swimming

Fort Adams is closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels.

The Department of Health (HEALTH) recommends the closure of in Newport to swimming due to high bacteria counts. Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend re-opening when the areas are safe for swimming. Water quality analysis is conducted by the HEALTH laboratory or a state certified laboratory.

This never ends, Year after year the city/state should be embaressed and do something but we know that won't happen. Our grand kids come next week and we swim, or were going to swim, at the FT.

I agree. We moved back to Newport last year and love everything about this town. But the beaches stink! Especially First Beach. There was even something wrong at Brenton Point during the kite festival (horrible stench that was NOT just "seaweed" or "low tide"). I read an article that blamed the elevated bacteria levels at First Beach on DEER POOP. Please. It's embarrassing that a prosperous town like Newport does not care about its beaches and is not truthful about the problems.

P.S. We have a surfer friend who actually gets sick from surfing at First Beach. Ewwww!

I grew up in Newport and let me tell you this is not the same city I grew up in. Families can not even afford to live in Newport. They are having to close down elementary schools, due to the lack of children. This city has been taken over by outsiders buying up property and renting out the houses, which were once single family homes are now 2 and 3 apt buildings. The city is out of control with drunk and disorderly conduct. If people want the old Newport back we have to stand together to do it!! Changes must be made. Stop all these Salve students from the loud drunken behavior all hours of the night. Stop all these short term rentals to partiers in the summer. We pay high taxes for these homes!!! The city has gone downhill. People are moving out of state. Personally I can't blame them. Lets work as a community to take back our city!!!!

I am very sorry for your loss. That is a terrible story. Were you able to file a lawsuit? That would get their attention! What will it take before this problem is addressed?
