Finally Friday: Polar Express, Shredding, Station Roof, Diner

Polar Express - The Blackstone Valley Polar Express returns to Woonsocket Sunday, Nov. 18, departing from Station One Depot Square at 1 and 4 p.m. for a 90-minute holiday excursion and reading of the Chris Van Allsburg’s classic, The Polar Express with appearances by The Chef serving hot chocolate and cookies, The Conductor, punching tickets, and The Engineer calling “All Aboard! Santa and Mrs. Claus appear and kids get a coloring book, crayons, and a very special gift presented personally by Santa.

Shredding Saturday - FREE for Woonsocket residents (Residential event only, no businesses)  Get rid of your old documents and confidential files safely at 943 River St., from 8 a.m. till noon Saturday. All papers will be shredded on location in a mobile truck.  Documents should be free of large binder clips; staples and paper clips may be left on documents.

Fire Station Roof - The city's seeking bids for a new roof on Fire Station #1, (pitched roof section only) at 169 Providence St. The roof, built in 1960, has two layers of asphalt shingles on the main roof decking, the top layer is in disrepair and has been patched several times using "liquid shingle." Check out the specs for the joband see if your company can take it on.

State Job - There's a job posting for a social worker making at least $43,321 a year with the RI Human Services Department. Polish up your resume.

Diner for lease - Been itching to start up a new restaurant? Neighborworks Blackstone River Valley is offering experienced restauranteurs a lease of the diner car once home to “Champs Diner,” on Park Avenue, now waiting a new tenant and customers at 719 Front St. The car was one of more than 600 diners produced by the Worcester Lunch Car and Carriage Manufacturing Company. 

Applications to win the lease, including a resume and business plan, are due Feb. 13.

As of today I can tell you that the trips are about 80% sold out for the entire run. Tickets are still available but I would not wait too long.
