Council Recognizes Firefighters for Saving Man's Life

Six firefighters were recognized by Newport City Council for saving the life of a Texas man last winter.

On Wednesday evening, the Newport City Council recognized five Newport firefighters and a Pawtucket Fire Lieutenant for saving the life of a Texas man last winter.

Last month,  Captain Thomas Welch (retired), Acting Lt. Richard Wheeler, FF Jared Leary, FF David Downes, FF Stephen Currey and Lt. David Reed were awarded a Rhode Island Lifesaving Medal for their lifesaving actions. 

On Dec. 22, 2012, Jerry Jones of Richland Hills, Texas, had a heart attack during a church service at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Pawtucket Fire Lieutenant David Reed was at the service and administered CPR to Jones until emergency crews arrived. The Newport Fire Department revived Jones and rushed him to Newport Hospital.
