City Council to Tackle Pedicabs, Ped. Safety, Licenses Tonight

It will be a busy night for the Newport City Council tonight as they address pedicabs, pedestrian safety and other issues.

A resolution on the docket asks for the the City Manager to review state and local laws pertaining to pedestrians in the crosswalks and determine if there's a need to improve safety measures. Additional traffic devices might include signs, markings or electrical warning devices. The resolution also would direct the police department to "strictly enforce any law which prohibits distracted vehicular operation (such as text messaging)."

Another ordinance would amend the proposed pedicab ordinance to reflect adjustments made by City Solicitor Joseph J. Nicholson Jr., who in a memo to the council said the changes "may reflect the council's collective attitude," but "I am unsure though."

The council will also consider an expansion the Barking Crab's annual entertainment license to allow DJs and full bands. The restaurant is currently restricted to background music and 2-3 musicians and vocalists with guitars.
