Xtra Mart Robbery Leads to Swift Arrest

The following arrest was reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Newport Police arrested a suspect an hour after a robbery was reported at the Sunoco Xtra Mart on Memorial Boulevard.

Newport police charged Travis Bell, 34, of 107 Rebecca Street, Woonsocket, with first degree robbery. On Saturday around 1:45 a.m., Bell allegedly approached the store counter with a large, hunter knife and said to the employee, “give me the money, or I’ll stab you.”

The employee gave him approximately $319 from the safe and called police approximately five minutes after Bell left the store. The employee said he met the suspect once with his cousin.

Police went to his cousin's address at Chapel Terrace and found Bell in the basement with the cash. Police drew their guns and placed Bell in handcuffs around 2:45 a.m. Bell reportedly told police the robbery was "staged" because his cousin gave him the knife and told him to “get the money.”
