Woman Accuses Cop of Being IRA Member

The following incidents were reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.


  • Audrey Barker, 42, of 197 Purgatory Road, was arrested for simple assault on Thursday at 3:35 p.m. Police said she was drunk and crying near Hotel Viking. Police said they tried to call her friend so she could go sober up, but she allegedly became agitated and said he would not answer if it was from her number. She allegedly demanded to use the officer's phone to make the call. She then accused the officer of being a member of the Irish Republican Army, said police. 

  • Amber Sutphin, 29, of 98 Center Ave., Middletown was arrested on Thursday at 4:14 p.m. on charges of shoplifting. She allegedly tried to steal candles, screwdrivers, a fragrance bottle, a bottle of surface restorer, wall plates and a book. The items totaled $97.60. 

  • Rodney Ford, 28, of 5 Mixter St., Middletown was arrested on Thursday at 6:42 p.m. on charges of simple assault and disturbing the peace. Police said a constable was attempting to serve court paperwork at the house. Ford was allegedly drunk, belligerent and “chest bumbed” him. 

  • Shanetet Sol, 23, of 90 Girard Ave., was arrested Wednesday around 6:50 p.m. on charges of domestic simple assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. She was allegedly yelling and swearing outside the bus stop outside of Festival Field.
