Survey Says RI is 6th Safest State in USA

Rhode Island has ranked pretty low in state-by-state economic and politically-related surveys recently, but according to WalletHub, the Ocean State is a pretty safe state to live in.

Rhode Island has ranked pretty low in state-by-state economic and politically-related surveys recently, but according to WalletHub, the Ocean State is a pretty safe state to live in.

The personal finance and social media network pegged Rhode Island to be the sixth safest state in the country based on data including the murder rate, traffic fatalities per 100 million miles of travel, health insurance rates, occupational deaths, sex offenders per capita and other crime statistics.

Leading the country is Massachusetts, followed by New Hampshire, Minnesota, Hawaii, the District of Columbia and Rhode Island.

Iowa, Illinois, Connecticut and New York round out the top 10.

Here's a breakdown of how Rhode Island fared in each of the categories:

  • 7th – Murder and Non-negligent Manslaughter per Capita
  • 7th – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel
  • 19th – Employer Health Insurance Coverage Rates
  • 2nd – Fatal Occupational Injuries per Total Employees
  • 4th – Sex Offenders Per Capita
  • 15th – Assault per Capita
  • 5th – Percentage of Population Without Health Insurance Coverage
  • 44th – Percentage of People Who Spend More Than They Make
  • 6th – Annual Consumer Savings Account Averages
  • 6th – Number of Climate Disasters (over 1 billion in damage)
