Police Investigating Early Morning Robbery on Gould Street

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department.

The Newport Police Department is investigating a robbery that occurred at the intersection of Gould Street and Congdon Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. this morning. Police have several leads to a suspect, but have not yet released his identity.

A 28-year-old Newport woman reported that she had been robbed after walking home Pour Judgement. She said she had left to walk home between 1 a.m. and 1:10 a.m.

She told police she noticed a man had been following her and that he pushed her down from behind. He tried to grab her bag and was unable to free it, but did manage to take her wallet and her iPhone. The wallet contained $300 in cash, her license, credit card, and other personal information.

The suspect then got into the passenger seat of a silver car, operated by a woman, and drove away. As the two were fleeing, the victim grabbed onto the side-view mirror and ripped it off.

Police recovered the mirror, which was covered in blood, reports said.

The victim suffered from several cuts and scrapes and was transported to Newport Hospital for pains in her arm.

Around 6:15 a.m., a man came to the police station asking if they had found a side-view mirror that had been broken off his silver Hyundai in the Gould Street area.

The man said he had been driving his wife’s car around 1 a.m. when a man and woman who were fighting tumbled into the side of his car. He told police he later noticed the mirror was missing.

Police seized his vehicle and he was brought in for questioning.
