Police Arrest Suspect at Gunpoint, Close Road

The following arrest was reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at gunpoint Wednesday after police surrounded the area around Motel 6, located at 249 Connell Hwy and shut down part of road for over an hour.

Jose Torres, 21, 23 Violet Street. Apt. #2, Providence, was charged with breaking and entering, a felony and three misdemeanor charges for domestic simple assault, and domestic refusal to relinquish telephone and a violation of a no contact order.

Torres allegedly got into a physical confrontation with a 19-year-old Newport woman inside the hotel. The manager told police when he knocked on the door and asked if she was OK, she yelled “no” because she was "being held hostage." She later told police Torres pushed her and would not let her leave the building.

Torres allegedly left the motel and went into a nearby storage facility. Police said they later learned he left the building on a bicycle, but nobody saw him leave.

“There were concerns that he had firearms or weapons in the storage unit, said Newport Sgt. Christopher Hayes. Police surrounded the motel and the storage and shut down the road.

Middletown police stopped a bus in the area of Home Depot.  Three officers entered the bus and pointed a gun at Torres. He was placed in handcuffs and arrested.

He allegedly told police he ran because he was on probation and did not want to get arrested.
