Police Arrest One in Stabbing Incident, Search Continues for Second Suspect

The following is based on reports from the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A 17-year-old Newport boy was arrested for a possession of a weapon other than a firearm charge and two counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon early Sunday morning at Festival Field.

He was arrested around 1 a.m. after police were dispatched to Festival Field for a fight report. Dispatch advised police that there had been a stabbing.

Middletown Police and state police also responded to the incident.

When police arrived, there were between 50 to 100 people outside of building six. The stabbing victim was already being treated. He was later brought to Newport Hospital.

The 17-year-old, who matched the description of one of the suspects, was stopped by police, who found a 13-inch metal pipe in the front of his waist band. He told police he did not stab anyone, but that he was trying to help the victim.

According to the victim's girlfriend, the 17-year-old had been on top of him punching him and had also hit her brother in the head with a pipe.

She also told police another man had stabbed the victim with a broken bottle.

Police are still looking for the second suspect. The incident is under investigation.
