No Agreement Reached with Newport Police Department

The city and the Newport Police Department failed to reach an agreement Thursday. The police contract will expire on June 30.

The Newport Police Department and the City of Newport failed to reach an agreement Thursday night, which was the last negotiations meeting before the existing contract expires on June 30. Police will work under the existing contract until an agreement is reached.

“We weren’t able to reach an agreement, but it is going well,” said Newport Police Sergeant Christopher Hayes. "We aren't that far off."

The terms of a new contract could retroactively apply as of July 1, which would impact any uniformed officer that was employed on or after that date. Although there are 23 officers eligible for retirement, no officers took retirement due to the negotiations, said Hayes.
