Newport Ranked 4th Most Violent Community in RI

Newport ranked 4th out of 37 Rhode Island communities according to 2012 FBI data.

Newport is ranked one of the state's most violent communities, according to analysis conducted by golocalprov.com. The study used 2012 crime statistics released by the FBI earlier this week.

Out of thirty-seven Rhode Island communities that report crime data to the FBI, Newport ranked fourth highest. Only Woonsocket, Providence and Central Falls reported higher violent crime numbers. Of the 104 violent crimes reported in Newport for the year, there was one murder, 11 forcible rapes, 15 robberies and 77 aggravated assaults.

Nationally, the number of violent crimes increased 0.7 percent over the previous year, according to the data.
